Colombian Official Backs Coup D’État Against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

Colombia Minister of Foreign Affairs Rosa Villavicencio during a media interview in Madrid, said that Colombia  was in favor for President Nicolas Maduro to hand over power to a transitional government to organize elections.

Villavicencio, who assumed the role of acting Foreign Minister in July 2025, indicated that the plan might be agreeable to the Maduro if he were guaranteed immunity from prosecution. She didn’t confirm if she obtained that information from the Venezuelan leader himself, or if it was her opinion based on publicly available news publications.

Such a move would represent a sudden shift from Colombia which had called for respect of Venezuela’s sovereignty following U.S deployment of warships near the country to pressure Caracas.

Bogota was until recently a strong ally of Washington, but relations deteriorated badly since the beginning of Trump’s second term. The US president has called Petro a “lunatic” and an “illegal drug leader,” slashed aid and revoked his visa and accused him of not doing enough to curb drug production in Colombia, the world's largest cocaine producer.
