In A Historical Move, Japan To Select It’s First Female Leader

Today Saturday, October 4, 2025, Sanae Takaichi, a 64-year-old ultra-conservative and former Economic Security Minister, was elected as the new leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Following this victory, she is expected to be formally elected as Japan's first female prime minister by the Diet in a parliamentary vote scheduled for mid-October.

She defeated Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in a runoff vote, and since the LDP holds a majority in Japan’s lower house of parliament, Takaichi is expected to be formally elected prime minister in a parliamentary vote scheduled for mid-October.
